INTEGRATED SECURITY SYSTEMS, INC. LAUNCHES EXPANDED
BARRIER PRODUCT LINE THAT PROVIDES SAFETY SOLUTIONS FOR RAILROAD
CROSSINGS
Irving, Texas - March 18, 1999 - Integrated Security Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq
Symbol: IZZI) today announced the expansion of its railroad safety
barrier product line. IZZI is the only manufacturer that currently
offers railroad safety barriers that have successfully passed
independent laboratory car and truck crash tests and are approved by the
U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration. The
two new barriers are the VT-6800 and VT-6802-HD which are designed to
lock down railroad intersections preventing vehicles from driving
through and around the barrier. The VT-6802-HD is an enhanced version of
the already tested and approved VT-6802 barrier installed at a Highway
Rail Crossing (HRC) in Madison, Wisconsin in October of 1998, at the
direction of Mr. Rodney Kreunen, State of Wisconsin Commissioner of
Railroads. Both the VT-6802 and VT-6802-HD contain a proprietary cable
system designed to restrain vehicles from entering the crossing's "no
traffic zone."
Three of the Company's four safety barrier products feature a
proprietary, patent-pending cable restraint system designed to capture a
vehicle and bring it to a complete stop before entering a railroad
crossing. The VT-6801 is a crash-resistant barrier designed for highway
use, which can lock down a roadway up to 50 feet wide. The VT-6802 and
VT-6802-HD barriers lockdown railroad intersections on roads up to 45
feet and 55 feet wide respectively. The VT-6800 safety barrier does not
contain a restraining cable system but can lock down a railroad
intersection up to 60 feet wide. The safety barriers are designed to
physically prevent vehicle intrusions onto the railroad right-of-way.
Prior to the new safety barrier technology, warning gates, designed to
deter but not prevent, vehicular passage through the visual and physical
presence of obstructing arms, have been deployed at approximately 31,000
of the 162,000 public HRCs in the U.S.
According to industry statistics in 1998, there were 3,030 accidents
reportable to the Federal Railroad Administration at HRCs resulting in
422 deaths. Of all the reportable accidents, approximately 74 percent
were attributable to motor vehicle intrusions on railroad crossings. Of
those accidents, many occurred at crossings with active warning devices
such as gates, flashing lights and bells.
"These new proprietary products expand IZZI's safety solutions for the
railroad barrier market estimated to be in excess of $500 million," said
Mr. Jack Caldwell, President of B&B Electromatic, the wholly owned
subsidiary of IZZI that designs and manufactures the new safety barrier
gates. "We continue to improve our position as an industry leader and
are responding proactively with forward-looking officials such as
Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson and Railroad Commissioner Rodney
Kreunen to the public's need for greater railroad crossing safety," he
added.
Headquartered in Irving, Texas, IZZI is a leading provider of traffic
control systems within the road and bridge and perimeter security gate
industries and has recently begun delivery of the new safety barrier
technology for highway railroad crossings. IZZI conducts design,
development, manufacturing and distribution activities for these
products through its wholly owned subsidiary, B&B Electromatic, Inc.
located in Norwood Louisiana.
